Local Landmark
Welcome to White Birch General Store!
Our store has always been a vital part of the community. Over the last hundred years, it has undergone various name changes and has offered a diverse range of products, everything from egg creams and postage stamps to movie rentals and groceries, but it has always been at the heart of Bennington.
Our roots date back to 1908 when Charles Smith established “Smith's Drug Store”. Business flourished and in 1925, "Uncle Charlie", as he was affectionately known, relocated the store to Main Street, where White Birch proudly stands today. The new location continued to operate as a drug store but Uncle Charlie also added a soda fountain where he served ice cream, flavored carbonated drinks and frappes.
Following Uncle Charlie's passing, the store was sold at auction to Donald Powers, who converted it to “The Village Spa”. Operating as a general store, it remained a cherished community hub until it was acquired in 1988 and renamed the “Bennington Country Store”. Throughout the 1990s, the store took on the additional role of the town's post office, until the COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately forced its closure.
After 3+ years, the 2,400 square foot landmark has proudly reopened with a fresh identity as White Birch General Store, named in honor of the New Hampshire state tree. With a complete interior renovation, we now offer a wide variety of locally-sourced food and products from the region. We hope that the store will once again become a beloved gathering place for the community and a convenient spot to pick up a cup of coffee, sandwiches, prepared meals, deli items, beverages, specialty foods and gifts.
We invite you to stop by to see our transformation!
